Review: The Child Thief by Brom

The first Brom book I ever read was Slewfoot and I loved it. I loved the writing and the illustrations and the whole vibe of the book. I had heard so many good things about Brom's other works and I decided to pick the one up. Now, I am not a fan of Peter Pan and Peter Pan retellings. The only thing I like from Peter Pan is Tick Tock Croc.

Right away with the prologue, this book rubbed me the wrong way and I almost did not read it. I do not like reading about daughters being raped/molested by their fathers and it seems like it is always when the mom dies and the father becomes an alcoholic. Peter obviously saves the girl. The next main character that we follow is a boy named Nick who is on the run from a drug dealer who his mom let move into their grandmothers house with them to help with bills.

Peter saves Nick and offers to take him to the world of Avalon of his own free will of course. Nick goes and is immediately dropped off with other kids. He has to fight his way to stay and he against Peter. Peter is on the way to get more children and then he sees the flesh eaters being way to close and starting fires. He is also enemies with the elf lord who is hiding away the main Lady. The lady is the one who is the creator of the mist.

This book was way too long and there was so much back and forth of the same thing. I was very bored and the ending I was just over it because it got religious with reverands and the captain having to be a doormat to them.

I also really disliked the ending because there was no developement in the story. The kids who fought for the lady died and the ones who survived were left behind by the lady and not given a second thought. She just left them back in their world to fend for themselves and to possibly go back to their abusive situations.

I am going to continue to read Brom's works, with the next one being Krampus. I really wanted to read that this year, but it will be made a priority for next year.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Want for Christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone and happy holidays to everyone else who does not celebrate the day for any reason. I hope you all are having a great and safe week. I hope that it is not too stressful and that you get to relax.

I usually base this topic on what I want for my birthday because my birthday is the 21st. Once again, my birthday was not great this year. Last year my cat died the week before and this year, I am grieving my grandmother and my husband's grandmother who we lost in April. We are also having to take care of family members who relied on our grandmothers. My husband's step grandfather lives along and we are the only family close by. My uncle who lived with my grandma is having a rough time and my mom and I are having to financially take care of him and pay his bills.

So to make me feel better, I am going to be sharing some of the books that I would like to see under the tree or on my shelves eventually whenever I am able to treat my shelf again. Here is the link to my wishlist. I am not expecting anything from anyone but if you do decide to send me something, it will be really sweet and thoughtful.

Top Ten Tuesday: Winter 2024-2025 TBR

Seasonal TBR time and I have a lot of library books out at the moment, so this topic was a piece of cake. I am hoping to get to most of these in the next two weeks, but who the heck knows. I have so much going on like everyone else and reading is starting to slow down and sometimes take a back seat. There are some chonkers on here that I know will take me a week or two to get through because I am not reading as fast as I used to, but every single book on this list is on here for a reason.. either I love the authors previous works, it's a movie adaptation or becoming a movie or a show... etc etc.

Review: Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

Finally continuing this series. I thought Stalking Jack The Ripper was ok and I really like Dracula retellings but dislike the original Dracula by Bram Stoker. I did have the mindset that if I did not like this one, I would not continue with the series and I would get rid of the first book of my shelf. I really liked this. I gave it 4 stars.

Audrey Rose and Thomas are on their way to Romania to attend an academy of medicine and forensics at Bran Castle. Home of Vlad Dracul or Vlad The Impaler. They are on journeying on a train when there is a murder on board. There has been a murder in the village close to Bran Castle where the victim was impaled with a stake. So tensions are already highand during this time Audrey Rose is having constant visions and hallucinations are bodies coming up out of the ground and bodies reanimating and she is constantly thinking about Jack the Ripper and reminding herself that he is no longer alive.

That was one of the things that annoyed me was the constant mention of Jack the ripper and comparisons. And of couse with this being set in the late 1880's there is sexism and Audrey Rose is trying to stand on her own feet, but she is getting belittled by the headmaster who is a total knob and also Thomas keeps trying to protect her and it is just not going well.

We get some new information that there are two major bloodlines from Dracula and the Dracul family. We learn that our main man Thomas Cresswell is the last male heir to Vlad the Impaler himeself. He doesn't want anyone to know and the current Prince to Romania who is of the other bloodline knows Thomas' secret and they dislikes each other immediately.

We learn about the Order of the Dragon and there are vampire bats, spiders, and wolves involved. The Romanian superstitions and legends is what kept me engaged and I really like that when Audrey Rose and Cresswell were having close encounters and wanting to kiss and just being in close proximity without the deed, that she called him Prince Dracula and that is what made me decide to keep reading the series.

When that line was said, I immediately thought of the Johnathan Rhys Meyers show Dracula and pictured him as Cresswell in the past scenes of that show. I hate that the show got canceled but that is besides the point.

I can read the rest of the series and still picture him like that and I hope that she will mention the prince title as some sort of pillow talk or flirty tease on the ship to America.
