The Martian Book & Movie Review
I was originally going to do a review on just the book, but then decided to review and compare both the book and the movie as well. I am going to start with the book first and then movie.
I requested this book from the library because I needed a book published by Random House to use for a house party activity. I decided for this one because I kept hearing great reviews for the movie and I wanted to read the book first before watching the movie. This book was amazing. It was heart wrenching, suspenseful, and anxiety rush all wrapped into one. I loved the different points of views and the comedy and humor that Mark Watney creates during his isolation on Mars.
One thing that caught me off guard and I kept getting confused was all the scientific talk, but it made sense to the story. My favorite part was when he did the Fonz pose for the picture that NASA had requested. One thing not about the story was that this book started out as self published. That is an amazing thing to have your book to start off self published, then picked up by a major publisher and then the rights bought to make it a major motion picture.
The book was amazing, but the big problem I had with it was the ending. It just stopped after he was rescued....like what happens next. Does he adapt by to life in Earth. How he is handled by the government along with the rest of the crew for doing the mutiny and going against orders.
Now I am going to review the movie.
Before I read the book, I was not going to watch this movie what so ever, because I don't like Matt Damon's acting. I have never liked any of his movies and I don't know why. But after reading the book, I HAD to watch the movie. Right off the bat, everything about the movie was different. The number of SOL's was higher and the HAB was not what I pictured. But the storm part was better than I imagined and the whole story after that seemed right. But it didn't have certain parts in the book like him hiding in the Rover after he found out that the HAB could blow up from the hydrogen in the air.
Also, it didn't show him going into the dust storm and going around the crater which I think was a huge part of the story. They just should him on track and then boom, he is at the ARES 4 sight with no complications. I also think they could have done a little bit more CGI to his body to make it look a little bit thinner and show muscle loss like in Gravity at the end when Sandra Bullock was finally back on Earth and her legs were thing as rails, we didn't get any of that.
Also the rescue part was a major let down because it wasn't like the book at all, and him casually saying he had broken ribs but then going out into space and laughing and smiling back in the ship is not the way one would act if dealing with broken ribs. The rescue scene in the book was better than the movie. But I love the ending to the movie where they show him as an instructor for new recruits at NASA and how the crew members were watching the ARES 5 launch with their families and Martinez going back to Mars. The casting for this movie was good, but I think someone else would have been better to play Mark Watney... Matt Damon just didn't fit the role.
I will say that this is another book to movie adaptation that I like equally.

Micah Review
Finally a short book by Laurell K. Hamilton. This novel is all about Micah and Anita. It is the 13th novel in the Anita Blake series, but considering the shortness of it and only focusing on Anita and Micah, I am calling it a novella.
This story starts off with Anita getting a frantic early morning phone call from Larry. He is a fellow animator and newlywed, soon to be father. He was prepared to go out of state on an animating job and his wife suddenly goes into labor early. This hit home for me because as you know I had Adalyn 5 weeks early and if was a horrible time for all of us. Back to the review, Larry asks Anita to fill in for him, and she has to hurry and pack and get on a plane to Philadelphia.
The major flaw in not going by herself is the ardeur. She needs someone by her side in case the ardeur arises and she doesn't want to have sex with a complete stranger. Micah agrees to go with her to be her assistant. Micah is wanting to romanticize the trip because it is the first time that they are both truly alone together without the other men. He upgrades the hotel room and she freaks.
We finally get to learn more about Micah and how he became a wereleopard. The sheriff that meets them at the airport is the same one that was on Micah's case. I am not going to go into detail about his changing and what happened to him... that would be major spoilers.
At the end, Anita goes to do the job and has to deal with a shithead defense lawyer who keeps objecting and questioning her every move. I really enjoyed this part of the story because it brought back her roots into the story as a animator and necromancer.
She also learns life changing details which I will not spoil.
This was a welcomed short read after Incubus Dreams, and I loved learning Micah's backstory.

Black 21 and Rose's Sin Review
This review will be on a full book and the prequel to that novel. The 1st book I will be reviewing is Black 21, book 1 in the Golden Hills Legacy. I got this book last year for review and just never got around to it, and I finally had time to review it and after I read it, I was kicking myself for not reading it sooner. It was interesting and it kept my attention.
Black 21 is about a girl named Daisy. She goes to live with her aunt and uncle for the summer because she had a terrible life changing experience.. I will get into that later. She is having problems with her cousin, who was involved with the above mentioned experience and she doesn't know it was him.
Her aunt and uncle introduce her to Christian, a young guy who needs a date for his 21st birthday ball. He is a well known figure in the community and she is pressured by her aunt and uncle to agree to this date. She goes to all these pre-party events with Christian that are for Christian and that's when she starts noticing strange things going on. The party goers scream Hail Christian and bow whenever he walks by.... yea weird right.
Now this community is a big satanist cult. SHOCKER!!! And on Christians 21st birthday, he will be taking over the whole town. I want to leave some of the plot off this review because I don't want to give anymore of the good stuff away. I will mention Jack who is basically the devil incarnate and he is boss of the whole thing. He rapes, tortures, invades privacy, and kills. There is of course girl drama and love triangle or love squares(4 sides)..
She also learns alot about where she came from, why she was born and who is not family and who is. There is a book 2 in the series that is based around Daisy and Christian's daughter... I can't wait to read that one.
This next book is the prequel to Black 21 called Rose's Sin.
This book is about Daisy's mother and all the events leading up to her death. Daisy's mother is named Rose. She marries a guy named Richard who is an attorney and monster. He makes a deal with Jack. He wants Jack to help him become partner at his law firm in exchange for raping and terrorizing Rose. Rose and Richard sleep in separate rooms and Jack visits Rose every night.
Rose is very religious and starts wearing a cross necklace which keeps Jack away. She gets the necklace from a priest who she falls in love with. Eventually this was Jack's plan all along for Rose to sleep with someone pure and to have the power of God in them. Now if you figured out by now, she gets pregnant which is what Jack wanted all along.
To know what happens next, you will have to read it. I usually stay away from prequels because they aren't long enough and I always want more. This book made me anxious and ready for book 2. I am hoping that the author has more books coming out for the series. This series would make an awesome TV show on AMC or HBO. I wouldn't want to see it as a movie because they would cut so much out that is important to the story.

Incubus Dreams Review
Back in high school, this was the last book I read in this series. I am excited that I have re-read it and ready to FINALLY move on with the rest of these books. I am happy that the next book after this one is short and basically a novella type. This novel was the 12th installment of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series and it was a long one, becoming the longest book I have read this year at 658 pages.
The story starts off with Anita being at her day job. She has been requested to raise a murder victim, which is a BIG NO-NO in the animating world. Murdered people who get raised as zombies are uncontrollable and will look for the killer to kill them and anyone who gets in that zombies way will be dead too. The mother of the teenage boy who was murdered becomes crazy and starts to attack Anita, so Anita does what she always does and she pulls out her gun and aims at the psychotic woman. The husband gets angry and then he starts attacking Anita. Eventually Anita agrees to assist the police in locating the murderer, but not to raise their son.
Next, Anita learns that she can partially control the ardeur by getting power from other's lust. We also learn that the link between Richard, Anita and Jean-Claude has given them new personality traits. Richard has more anger thanks to Anita, Jean-Claude has permission from Anita to feed off his patrons lust.
We are also introduced to a new asshole vampire named Prim who basically wants to take over Jean-Claude's role of Master of the City. We also learn that Malcolm, the leader of the Church of Eternal Life, has not been giving the blood oath initiation to his followers which leads to some of the vampires not obeying his rules. There was a master vampire named Vittorio among the followers and he would have some of his vampire friends go with him to strip clubs, which is a NO-NO in the church rules, and they would kill a stripper and leave them in plain sight. A stripper gets taken hostage and of course, Anita goes and saves the hostage, kills the master and his minions and some po-po's get killed in the process.
I would go into more detail but, I have spoiled enough of this for you and if you want to know more, then you just have to read the book.

Father's Day 2016
Sorry for another late post, I promise that my posts will start be up again around 8AM sometime soon. I have so much stuff on my plate right now, that my posts are being pushed to the back burner. Anyways, yesterday was Father's Day and it was a good one.
We haven't really celebrated just acknowledged it, but yesterday it was more than the past years. Around midnight, I gave Cayce two of his presents. Just to say, his presents were freebies that I got that I knew he would like, use and laugh at. The pictures of these items are in previous freebie hauls. The first gift was a little pack of Limited Edition Marvel Hubsnaps. We didn't know what they were meant for at first, so we looked them up and found that you just click them and collect them. Kind of a gag gift like the Effie Trinket POP Funko.
The second gift was a can of dry spray deodorant. Since it's the summer and he is working outside, he needs that protection so he doesn't scare the customers away at his job...lol. He loved it and it will definitely be gone in a week or two. The last present, he wanted to wait for after breakfast.
We had an easy breakfast of cereal. We didn't want to cook and heat the house up, but we did have a good little photo session.

Addy never looks at the camera.. BOOO Addy!
Cayce has his third and final Father's Day present on his head.
His third and final gift was the headlamp from Marlboro. Also the above picture is just how our typical morning looks like. Sammy gets Addy's spoon, Ariana getting her spoon and Cayce yawning at the table.
The rest of the day, we just watched Cayce play Fallout 4 and then went grocery shopping and did some house work. For supper, we had burgers and fries. Simple and Cayce definitely appreciated it.
Can't wait to eat...lol
Ready to chow down on those fries
Loving her burger
Has to pose in every picture
my plate... makes me want more!!!
I think Cayce enjoyed his Father's Day this year, better than the last few.
