I have finally started a series that I have been eyeing for years because of these covers. They are so stunning. I am a major cover buyer. That and the fact that they take place during WW1 and WW2. I think the reason that it took me so long to pick up this book was the fact that it starts 10 years after WW1, but a good chunk in the middle is dedicated solely to our main character Maisie's backstory during her time as a war nurse and falling in love.
This is not a romance story what so ever and it was kind of a welcome relief because this book starts off with Maisie opening her private investigation business. She gets her first client who is a well off man who wants his wife followed because he thinks she is having relations with another man. Maisie takes the case and finds out that the woman is going to a cemetary everyday to pay her respects to her first love. A man named Vincent. Maisie befriends the woman to find out the story of Vincent and the other graves of men who only have a first name. She learns about a place he was at when he took his life called The Retreat.
The Retreat turns out to be a place where severely injured soldiers and men who can't acclimate back into civilian life can go to just be free from the stares. Maisie does everything she can to figure out the reasoning behind The Retreat and possibly save lives.
I can't wait to read the second book. I know that her relationship with her Captain wont be in the book, but I am hoping that we have more flashback scenes from her time after the war and till the start of the first book.
