Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Want to Read Out Loud to My Kids This School Year!

 

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's topic is a school freebie since school has started or will start soon. I homeschool my kids and have started my 9th year in doing so. My oldest is in 8th grade, my middle is in 7th grade and my youngest is in 5th grade. I try to read out loud to them everyday and it has to be my favorite part of the day. I know it is their favorite part because they alwasy want me to keep going. I like to stop on chapters that have cliffhangers just to get their reactions. 

I always try to aim to read two books a month to them because I find that if a book takes almost the whole month, we will forget what happend or get really bored which results in a low star rating for all of us. Enjoy my list.

Review: Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

 I had to buy the 25th anniversary edition of this because after reading Outlander, I just could not get it out of my mind. I kept thinking of it and ended up changing my rating froma 4 to a 5 and I absolutely LOVED season 1 of the show. Going into this, I had no expectations and was just going along with it.

The first half of this made me shook and I also laughed way to much at Jamie. I read along while listening to the audio book and there were so word changes and sentences left out. I did enjoy the connections to the minor characters in the first book. I enjoyed learning who Roger really was and I had questions answered, but more popped up. 

I didn't think I would enjoy the setting as much because they left Scotland, but I enjoyed the France setting and the royal life. Some characters were just weird and annoying. How some scharacters acted towards each other after being horrible in the first was very bizzare.

This installment has two timelines again. We start the book in the 1960s and then we go back to the 1700s. There were some parts that I cried at and then the end where I was expecting to cry, I didn't because I know there are more books and this character is alive because duh the show spoils everything in trailers and posters. 

I did get a little bored at the end with the fighting between the Highlanders and the Red Coats. I couldn't wait to start the second season of the show while reading this and now I am not that eager to start the second season. Again, I ended up giving this a 4 out of 5 stars because I am just not thinking of it as much as I did Outlander when I finished. I have no idea what to expect in book 3 and don't know if I will pick that up before the end of this year or at the beginning of next year. 

A Month Since My Last Post??// Sunday Post #36

Hello everyone. It is hard to believe that it has been a month since my last Sunday Post. August has been eventful. The first two weeks of the month was my wrap up of babysitting the toddlers and I have to say that I have missed them these last two weeks. My daughters and I have picked up little mannerisms from them just to have a giggle every now and then. We also started our new school year and it has been a time. We all came down with food poisoning two days before we started, so the last two weeks we have been dealing with that and it eventually messed up our sinuses and it gave all of us fevers for the third time this year but not Covid. We are finally starting to feel better, just still drained and exhausted. 

My reading has been ok. I read Dragonfly in Amber on audio and it took me two weeks because of the illness. I will have my review up of that this week because I have been procrastinating on EVERYTHING! Blogposts, editing my youtube videos from March, even filming again seems like it will never happen. I am also 3 books behind on my Goodreads goal which has never happened before. 

I am currently reading Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner and I don't think I made a wise choice in picking it up. I got the book for my birthday last year and have been wanting to read it every month. In June, my husband got some awful news that his aunt has been diagnosed with breast cancer and when I went into this book, I told myself not to think of her because she is doing well. But then tonight( Saturday) as I was reading a chapter, one word made me start bawling my eyes out. 

I lost my grandfather to lung cancer back in January 2005. I was 14 years old and I remember the day vividly when my dad came and picked me up after lunch and the teachers just looking so sad and seeing my mom sitting in the car. The thing that made me cry was that the book mentions that she had cases of every flavor of Ensure and I was instantly thrown back to Christmas of 2004 sitting at the table and my grandpa just drinking those things down because it was the only thing he could stomach. You would think that 17 years the pain of losing a family member wouldn't be so raw, but the property that I live on was given to me from him, so everyday I am constantly reminded of him. 

I am sorry if my story time causes anybody emotional trauma or horrible feelings. It is not my intention, I just wanted to share that with you and if you are triggered please let me know in the comments. 

I am only going to be sharing what books I have gotten this week from publishers and the only blogposts that went up this month were blog tours and some reviews of books that I did finish this month.
