TBR Thursday #6

I am patiently waiting for The Winds of Winter like everyone else. I really enjoy George R.R. Martin's writing and I can't wait for House of the Dragon on HBO Max.

Top Ten Tuesday: The Books I Want for My Birthday and Christmas!!

 

Thanks to Jana for hosting Top Ten Tuesday. Today is my birthday. I have made 31 trips around the sun and it has been wild. Today's prompt is what books do you want from Santa. I have already gotten so many birthday and Christmas presents this weekend from family and friends because I am one of the people that gets combined presents. Always have since childhood. But these are the 10 books that I am hoping somehow make their way to me and surprise me on Christmas.

Review: The Golem and The Jinni by Helene Wecker

 

Another 5 star read for the year. I really loved this character driven story. I was gripped from chapter one with the creation of the golem and why she was created. I was kind of bored with the second chapter because the jinni was not interesting to me. This is a historical fiction novel about two creations from different religions. A golem is a clay model of a human. Our golem was made for a man who died right after waking up the golem on the boat to America. A jinni is a being who is flame and is lower ranking than angels.

The golem eventually escapes the boat and steps into New York and is found by a rabbi who notices her straight away. He wars with himself to destroy her or teach her how to be human. He gets her a room in a boarding house and a job in a bakery in the Jewish neighborhood. The jinni is freed from a copper flask by a tin smith. This copper flask had been handed down for generations and the jinni was captured for over a thousand years. He emerges with an iron cuff on his wrist binding him to his human form. 

I really enjoyed this story. Every character that was introduced, their story was immediately told and how they would impact the lives of our main characters. I didn't find myself bored with the jinni long. I also did request the second book from my library immediately because I need to know what happens since it will also be around the time of World War 1. 

5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend!!

Girl Scouts Dominate My December // Sunday Post # 20

 

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly from The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. 

Hello blogging friends. I have missed you guys these last two weeks. From the title, you can tell that Girl Scouts took over the last two weekends and the weeks leading up to those weekends were filled with drama and communication problems and text message debates. The first weekend was the girl scout father daughter dance on Friday and on Sunday it was my town's Christmas parade and my husband volunteered to use our trailer as the float. We decorated it at my house the night before and there was so much tension because it was last minute, but the parade was successful and fun.

Last weekend is when the shit hit the fan. I started the great text debate and put my foot down about the communication and the last minute planning. Of course the leaders got defensive where it came to a point where me and the other parents thought about putting our girls in a new troop. But we got it figured out in time for the Christmas party last Saturday and watching the girl open their gifts from their secret sisters was just worth it. 

My reading these last two weeks has slowed down because I am putting more time into work so I can relax starting this week and get ready for my birthday on Tuesday. I will be 31 and all the drama this month so far, I feel older. I will be going back and reading ya'lls posts and commenting. I hate that I couldn't make the time to sit a write a post let alone comment and read ya'lls work because I genuinely enjoy reading blog content. Also with that, There was a week where I didn't have any posts go up. I felt guilty but I realized that I will burn myself out and that I can't do everything at once.

I went to my local Dollar Tree and I did some shopping. I bought Dragon Pearl from Amazon and Tiger Honor was sent to me by Disney Publishing. I am hyping myself up for Siberian Dilemma. I love covers that have snowy forests and looks dangerous. 

I have been watching a lot of TV to get my mind of the Girl Scout drama and the stresses of life. One of my favorite things to watch are documentaries. I love learning about nature and animals and then I also am obsessed with Marvel. I am still asking myself why wasn't I at the theatre at midnight to watch the new spiderman movie and I then I look at my husband and kids and go yep, that's why....lol. I also finally started watching season 2 of Game of Thrones.

Pizza is such a cutie. I want more of him in the last episode.

Review: Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headly

 

I finally picked up this book that I have been staring at all year. I admit that I hyped up this book and was a little hesitant to pick it up because I didn't want to be disappointed but I think this is the first time that I have been really into giving a book a half star rating. I don't think this a 5 star book but it is definitely a 4.5 star book. 

When I started reading this I was in the middle of reading The Lighthouse and they both had characters with a name that started with a A. I had to put this book aside because I wanted to give all my attention to it and plus The Lighthouse was about to expire. But during the first section that I read, I had to research the Magonia legend. I didn't look much into it because I didn't want to confuse anything.

We follow a girl named Aza and she has a terminal breathing problem. She has had this breathing issue since she was a toddler and no one can figure out what is wrong with her. One day she faints and has the worst breathing day, she also hallucinates a ship in the sky or does she. She gets an MRI and they find something that is not supposed to be there and it puzzles everyone.

Her best friend Jason is obsessed with facts and knowing things. He immediately starts researching ships in sky before Aza faints. He then learns the legend of the world of Magonia and how it goes back into the early civilizations. The the real fun begins when they think and see that she ********. 

When she meets the new people who I am not going to name because I don't want to spoil this book, when she meets them I had this bad vibe straight away. The little birds in the chest thing creeped me out. When she met the falcon, I wanted to cry because the type of cage I pictured, I just saw the falcon bunched into it and it screaming kill me, made me want to cry. 

I will be picking up the sequel Aerie maybe next month. 

Review: The Lighthouse by Christopher Parker

 

Thanks to Netgalley for the e-copy of this October release. It is a young adult magical realism book about a small town and how a local teens death may not be what it seems. 

We follow a young girl named Amy who is grieving the recent death of her mother. She and her dad are not getting along and her dad is a cop. He gets an assignment that takes him to the small town of Seabrook to notify the family, that they are closing the case because they don't have the resources to search for a runaway. Amy's dad Kevin ends up taking her along to give them a change of scenery.

The first night in the hotel, Amy decides to take some of her dad's sleeping pills to help her sleep and she ends p falling asleep in the bath tub. Here enters Ryan, a local boy who is having the worst time in life. He has been a caregiver to his dad for years who suffered a stroke and he has to run the family ranch and take care of the horses. Ryan is not telling his dad all that is wrong because he does not want to risk him having another stroke because it could be fatal. 

Ryan is at the hotel and he sees puddles of water coming from Amy's room and he goes into the bathroom and sees her unconscious. She eventually wakes up and screams at him. Then she goes to bed and wakes up the next morning and has the urge to apologize to him.

I ended up giving this book a 3 out of 5 stars because half of the book was romance and I was wanting more of the paranormal magical feeling. During the romance we do get the creepy story of the Lighthouse and how it is supposedly haunted by the old lighthouse keeper. When it did get to the good parts, I was a little bored with the normal problems and the insta love. The insta love was not my cup of tea and I did not enjoy it. 

I will be on the lookout for more books by this author because the writing style I liked and the 3 POV's flowed really well together and was not disjointed.
