Review: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

My first Riley Sager and I really really liked it. I gave it 5 out of 5. I got my copy back in June 2020 thanks to Book of the Month and I finally decided that it was time to read it and I am so glad that I did.

I have tried to stay away from people talking about this and reviewing it because I wanted to go in knowing next to nothing. I only knew that it had a book within a book and I was obsessed with the House of Horrors book. The main character Maggie is an adult and her father just died and she finds out that the house that has identified her and plagued her life is now her property.

When Maggie was 5, her and her parents moved into Baneberry Hall. This is the scary mansion that almost all small towns have who once belonged to the wealthy man in town. Maggie's father wants the house and his wife is against it. She sets some boundaries for her husband that he can under no circumstances research the history of the house and the deaths of the Carver family. Of course he doesn't do that and it is a good concept into a proper ghost story.

The present day sections of adult Maggie going back to the house and trying to remember if stuff that her father wrote really happened or if it was all really bullshit. I was bored and not interested in her story at the beginning, but through the middle, I got more and more invested where I started to lose interest in the House of Horros because every chapter left of on the same cliffhanger.

Review: The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha Christie

I have finished my 6th Agatha Christie book for the Agatha Christie challenge and this is the first book in her Superintendent Battle series. I started reading this physicaly and it felt lagging. I picked up the audiobook and enjoyed it so much. I may listen to the audiobooks for the rest of this challenge because listening to these books were so much better. I also read along which amped up my enjoyment because I laughed A LOT during this reading.

We follow a bunch of characters in this book and with the series being the Superintendent Battle series, I am assuming that he is going to be the main character we follow in the rest of this series. He didn't get introduced until halfway through the book. But we meet a character named Anthony Cade and Jimmy McGrath. McGrath wants Anthony to pretend to be him and deliver a package to a London publisher because it contains the manuscript of a assassinated man who has recorded secrets of a country who has a shit ton of political turmoil.

We meet even more characters and to be honest, this is where I started the audiobook because I started mixing up who was who and why they were even mentioned. The character who is my favorite and the most relatable was Lord Chaterham who owned the residence where the murder took place. He didn't want people to stay longer in his house than was neccessary and he was tired of be talk to before breakfast and lunch. He just wanted to go away and give the house away and go abroad to get away from people. His daughter Bundle was also a hoot. Some of my favorite quotes came from these characters and I am kind of hoping but I know that they won't be in the rest of the series.

Review: Canaries Among Us by Kayla Taylor

I read this thanks to onlinebookclub.org. I was given the opportunity to review this and I got to chose this out of a list. I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because I had a wide range of emotions and physucal feelings while reading this.

This is about a mother who has a high functioning child who goes to a private school and deals with bullies- both students and school faculty. The author goes into detail about her journey to stop the bullying of her daughter by two of her classmates. The principle is a real egotistical, sexist man and he gaslights the author and her husband constantly. The teachers end up not meeting Hannah's needs and making her "suck it up" and "get over the bullying".

The author takes her child to get tested and to see a therapist because the bullying gets so bad that she starts to pull her hair out and stop eating and have behavior issues. I was constantly getting angry and putting this book down because I just wanted to go smack each and every one of the adults who were not paying attention to Hannah's needs and then placing all of the blame on her at the end.

Two seventh graders discover it takes more than grit and a good pair of shoes to run 13.1 miles. You’ve got to have a partner who refuses to let you quit.

Drew was never much of a runner. Until his dad’s unexpected diagnosis. Mia has nothing better to do. Until she realizes entering Half Moon Bay’s half-marathon could solve her family’s housing problems.

And just like that they decide to spend their entire summer training to run 13.1 miles. Drew and Mia have very different reasons for running, but these two twelve year olds have one crucial thing in common (besides sharing a birthday): Hope. For the future. For their families. And for each other.

Reviews:

"Drews prose is direct and descriptive; Mia uses free verse to capture concise moments and feelings. . . . Uplifting."Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

"Via distinct dual perspectives that alternate between Drews POV, told in compassionate prose, and Mia’s, conveyed in rhythmic verse, Vickers (Like Magic) vividly captures one emotionally turbulent summer filled with a friendship’s mutual trust and support."—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Vickers deftly distinguishes between the alternating perspectives by composing Drew’s point of view in prose and Mia’s chapters in verse. . . . their perceptiveness and the parallels between their concerns about family finances and relationships greatly enhance the emotional appeal of this story."—The Bulletin for the Center of Children’s Books
