I am thrilled to be hosting a stop on the LUCKY CALLER by Emma Mills Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours! Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:
Title: LUCKY CALLER
Author: Emma Mills
Pub. Date: January 14, 2020
Publisher: Henry Holt & Company
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Pages: 336

With the warmth, wit, intimate friendships, and heart-melting romance she brings to all her books, Emma Mills crafts a story about believing in yourself, owning your mistakes, and trusting in human connection in Lucky Caller.

When Nina decides to take a radio broadcasting class her senior year, she expects it to be a walk in the park. Instead, it’s a complete disaster.

The members of Nina's haphazardly formed radio team have approximately nothing in common. And to maximize the awkwardness her group includes Jamie, a childhood friend she'd hoped to basically avoid for the rest of her life.

The show is a mess, internet rumors threaten to bring the wrath of two fandoms down on their heads, and to top it all off Nina's family is on the brink of some major upheaval.

Everything feels like it's spiraling out of control―but maybe control is overrated?

PRAISE FOR LUCKY CALLER

A well-crafted, bittersweet comedy of errors filled with realistically flawed characters and taut, witty dialogue. - Publishers Weekly Starred Review

REVIEW: One of my most anticipated reads of 2020 solely because of the radio journalism concept. I wanted to be a sportscaster growing up and I got accepted into a college that had the communications major that I wanted to do. One of the classes I was given was radio broadcast. I ended up not going to college because I had a newborn baby who will be turning 11 in April. Reading that chapters that were written in script form of the radio shows just brought back so much nostalgia for me and some repressed feelings.

The relationship between Nina and Jaime was a little slow and mediocre. I felt that Nina was just to much of an over thinking jokester if that is even a thing and Jaime was just chill and to trusting. I also didn't like how the conflict between the two was drawn out so much and the reason for the awkwardness between them wasn't given until halfway through.

About Emma:

Review: Romanov by Nadine Brandes

Another book that I definitely slept on last year. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and its because it is a magical retelling of Anastasia. I grew up watching the cartoon movie thanks to my grandma and I have always been fascinated with any and everything dealing Russian history. Particularly Imperial Russia and the Romanov family.

The author's note included in this book is something that I really appreciated. She clearly announces that the first half of this book has is mostly factual with a few truths stretched to make the story more engaging. The second half is purely the imagination of Nadine Brandes with real names.

If you don't know the history of the Romanov family, they were the last Tsar family in Imperial Russia before it was taken over by the Soviets. They accused the Tsar of not caring for the people and called for his abdication. Soon after, the Bolsheviks sent the family into exile in Siberia. They were held captive while the Soviet Red Army engaged in war with the Loyal White Army.

The Romanov's were brutally executed on false orders and the conspiracy theories to this day announce that Anastasia and her brother Alexei survived the execution but that turned out to be rumors. There have also been multiple impersonators throughout the years and disgracing and disrespecting the lives of the family.

Review: Circle of Shadows by Evelyn Skye *spoilers*

The first book I have finished for 2020. I wanted to finish it on New Years Eve, but I ran out of time, and I didn't want to fly through it. I really enjoyed this one. I had it on my list of anticipated reads last year after I saw it on someone's Fairy Loot unboxing and it had lavender sprayed edges. It is an Asian inspired magical fantasy. The sequel comes out this year and I do not know if it is a trilogy or if it will be a duology.

We follow this girl named Sora, but her soldier name is Spirit. She is part of an elite group called the taigas who protect Empress Aki and the kingdom of Kichona. She is a Level 12 apprentice and close to graduating and her partner or her "gemina" is her friend Wolf, who was raised by wolves in the wild.

To get taiga powers, they have to be blessed as babies by the moon goddess Luna who gives them whorls on their bodies that marks them. As Sora and Wolf get their first mission, they complete it and head to Sora's family home to celebrate the Autumn Harvest. On the way to spend the rest of their break in the woods, where Wolf was found, they come across something startling and they see the one person who everyone in the Kingdom believes to be dead.

I was enthralled with this book and I could put it down but I found myself picking it right back up after 5-10 minutes. It is a quick read, but I would recommend to pace yourself because if you read through it too quickly, you will miss some things.

I can not wait for the sequel Cloak of Night to be released next month, and I hope that Fairy Loot will release a special edition.. PLEASE FAIRY LOOT!!!

DECEMBER 2019 READING WRAP UP

I always plan for December to be a chill reading month and read maybe 3 or 4 books, but to end 2019 I read 12 books. I participated in the tis-the-season-a-thon at the beginning of the month and I read three books. After, I was on a freakin' roll and did not want to stop. I wanted to read as much as I could. I enjoy pretty much everything that I read, and found some new favorites along the way.

2. Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, Lauren Myracle

3. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston

4. The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

5. The Hard Way by Julie Luongo

6. Why Not Me by Mindy Kaling

7. The Strangers by Margaret Peterson Haddix

8. Dealing in Dreams by Lilliam Rivera

9. Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
