About C. Michael Morrison:

Author of Hannah Goodheart and the Guardian of Time, C. Michael Morrison is a man of many talents. His passion for story telling began as a boy growing up in a small river valley town in West Virginia, where Mike cultivated an affection for science fiction. It’s no surprise that these days, he can be found on the Trek.fm podcast network, where Mike is co-host of Meta Treks: A Star Trek and Philosophy podcast, as well as an occasional contributor to other shows on the network.

In addition to being a devout PEZ collector, Mike is Lead Pastor of Collin Creek Church in Plano, TX.

Mike lives in the Dallas area with his wife, Dorinda, daughter, Hannah, and their standard poodle, Princess.

February 2020 Reading Wrap Up

I have read another 10 books this year. I am thinking that is going to be my goal this year will be to get to 10 books a month. Now that I say that, watch me not reach that goal at all this month. I have only gotten through 2 so far this month. 

Review: Lost in Shangri- La by Mitchell Zuckoff

My second February pick for my A-Z reading challenge and I finished it in March. It was a fast read, but it was very dated. It is about a plane crash in Dutch New Guinea during World War 2. Twenty Seven passengers all went down and only 3 survived. Two men and a female soldier. They landed in a valley that was named Shangri-La by the pilots that flew in it and it was not documented on the map at the time.

The three survivors had to wait a week before being found and then a unit of Filipino- American paratroopers was given the mission to go in for medical and protect from the natives who were thought to be cannibalistic head hunters.

The natives were often referred to as savages which makes this dated and how discriminate the white soldiers were of natives. This was a quick read and it had a lot of pictures to go along with what was written, but I sometimes found myself getting confused when other people who weren't the survivors were being described and their family history being included which had nothing to do with the rescue of these three soldiers at all.

About Dave:

Dave Matthews has chronicled his life’s travels so often that when asked, he can rattle off the details without pause. It goes like this:

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1967. Moves two years later with his family to Westchester County, NY, where his dad, a physicist, goes to work for IBM. Then, in the early `70s, to Cambridge, England, before returning to New York — where his dad died in 1977. The family moved back to South Africa in 1980, where Matthews went to a few different schools and “got more wise about the evils of government, there and in general.” O.K.; pause for a breath.

The key move for Dave Matthews Band fans, of course, was when he relocated in 1986 to Charlottesville, VA, where his parents had lived before he was born. Though he also logged time back in South Africa and in Amsterdam, it was in Charlottesville where Matthews — who took piano lessons as a child before picking up the guitar at age nine — became part of the local music community and hatched the idea for his own band.

“I didn’t really have a vision, or a plan,” says Matthews, acknowledging that some of his musical sensibility came from spending time in so many different places as a child. “I’m sure it gave me a little bit of an openness. The most diverse music in the world is in America, ’cause there’s so many different cultures here, but what tends to be pushed to the top is often a narrow view of what there really is. So maybe (his travels) just gave me a wider pool of listening.”

Matthews says his principal goal with the band was to surround himself with the best players possible. To this day he remains “amazed” that he was able to recruit and retain the four musicians he rather modestly refers to as his superiors. “I was just looking for people that I liked,” explains Matthews, who feels he’s “gotten a bit better” over the years. “Could I play with them was more of the question, I think. We just ended up fitting together. The band wasn’t something that I was looking for; it was very much I loved the people I asked to play with me. There was a connection at the beginning, and I think what we’ve been about is not some grand scheme but more the spirit of everyone, which is why we ended up with this band and why it sounds like it does.”

About Clete:

Clete Barrett Smith’s first novel for teens, Mr. 60%, will be released by Crown Books in August, 2017. Smith has also written four humorous middle grade adventures: Aliens on Vacation Alien on a Rampage, Aliens in Disguise, and Magic Delivery. Aliens on Vacation was released by Disney-Hyperion Books for Children in May, 2011 and named an American Booksellers Council “New Voices” selection as one of the top middle grade novels of the year by a debut author; and AOV was nominated for state award lists in Texas, Florida, Washington, Pennsylvania and Nebraska. About James:

James Riley is the New York Times bestelling author of the HALF UPON A TIME series, the STORY THIEVES series, and the REVENGE OF MAGIC series. Contrary to what previous biographies have stated, he is a) real and b) not the character Nobody from his STORY THIEVES books. Where would people even get that idea? (Spoiler: From him. He totally made it sound like he really was Nobody. He thought it’d be funny. We’re sorry.)

He was born in Connecticut, where he lived for only a short time before moving to … well, quite a few states. He currently lives in Northern Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C., because that’s where his cats are. He has four of them. Other people think that’s a bit much.

Book 1 review: I read this in August 2023, so very late. This book gives me Trials of Morrigan Crow and City Spies vibes. City Spies definitely came out after the first book, but they have similar characters with the teachers and students.

We follow a boy named Fort who is visiting Washington DC with his dad. They are at the Lincoln Memorial and Fort is being embarrassed because his dad has the most awful dad jokes and trying to get Fort a girlfriend. Next thing that happens is that the ground starts to vibrate and a giant monster claw comes popping out of the ground. Fort's dad is sadly the only casualty and Fort gets sent to live with his aunt. 

A guy comes by and introduces his self as Dr. Oppenheimer and he runs a special school for children who have magical abilities that were born on a certain day 12 years ago. The special day is known as discovery day because that is when these magic books were found along side dragon riders and dragon remains.
