REVIEW: Before I started reading this book, I found out there was a book 1 called Charlie and Frog. You can read these books out of order like I did because this book recaps the main characters, the school, and the relationships. It also represents the Deaf community. I haven't read that many books with this representation and love that this is a middle grade.
We start reading about how Charlie's parents are still clueless on the parenting front and being totally absent in Charlie's life. They are reading almost every book possible on the topic of parenting but then leave him once again to go to Texas to give "so much love and attention" to some animals.
We are also told the story of some bad pirates and a good pirate named Boney Jack. He was a good pirate because he returned all the "booty" that the bad pirates stole and they were not up for that. They mutinied against and sent him to his death by walking the plank on the Hudson River.
I can't wait to re-read this with my kids around Halloween. This was such a fun little detective book and I loved that the end pages have the American Sign Language Alphabet.
Karen Kane’s path to
Charlie & Frog led her from a small village near Rochester, NY, to the
bustle of Washington, DC. The people she met along the way inspired her writing
with their warmth and humor, especially those in the Deaf community. Karen
graduated from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and received her
MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
When she’s not writing, Karen spends her days as a sign language interpreter at
Gallaudet University or lost in the stacks of her local library. Charlie &
Frog is her first novel.
