Volume 1:Starting another manga series because my kid really wanted to read this and thanks to Gavin from Youtube, I boarded the hype train. I decided to request the bind ups because it would be easier to read the series and somewhat faster.
I did have to push through the very beginning because it was kind of boring with Little kid Luffy wanting to joining Captain Shanks pirate crew and he eating the gum gum fruit which basically turns him into rubber and makes him indestructible. He then grows up, as kids do and then he goes off in his own little dinghy to beomce King of the Pirates.
We then meet Lady Alvida and her crew. She is the "fairest" pirate in all the seas and we meet her cabin boy Koby who meets Luffy. Koby is fearful and he gets confidence from Luffy and he finally stands up to the old pirate hag and Luffy of course defeats her. Koby then tells Luffy that he doesn't want to be a cabin boy anymore and he wants to join the Navy. Luffy and Koby then head to the next village to find another crew member and to get Koby in the Navy.
Luffy then wants to find the notorious pirate hunter Zolo. Koby is once again adament that Luffy stay away. Luffy then spots the criminal in the middle of the yard in the prison tied to a post. A little girl walks up to him and offers him rice balls but he refuses. Luffy then jumps the wall and asks Zolo to join his pirate crew. Zolo is against it and states that he made a bargain with Captain Morgans idiot son that he could last 30 days on the post.
Helmeppo is Captain Morgan's son and honestly he made me laugh. He was such a daddy's boy and when Luffy hit him, he screamed for his daddy like a rich girl does when she doesn't get her way. Luffy does eventually get Zolo free and they defeat Captain Morgan and Zolo becomes the first member of Luffy's crew.
Luffy, Koby and Zolo eventaully make their way to the tavern and the navy come to thank Luffy but to ultimately kick him out because he is a pirate. Koby decides to stay behind but is afraid that the Navy will find out that he served under Lady Alvida and not let him join. So Luffy starts telling the Navy everything where Koby gets so angry that he starts fighting Luffy.
Once Luffy and Zolo are on their way, they come to another village where they meet Nami who is a pirate thief. She robs treasure from pirates and this is where Luffy meets Captain Buggy's crew.
Volume 2: Volume 2 starts right where volume 1 leaves off with Nami and Luffy arguing about joining his crew and she wanting to know what is so special about him straw hat. Luffy really wants her to be his navigator and she is dead set. She has stolen Captain Buggy's map to the grand line and the one piece. Nami ends up taking Luffy as prisoner to Captain Buggy to get close to try to get his crew drunk so she can rob them of the treasures that Buggy just stole.
That ends up not going to plan and Captain Buggy is going to blow Luffy to bits. Luffy had me laughing because he was trying to chew his way out of the cage. Zolo comes to the rescue and fights Buggy. Little does he know that Buggy has also eating the devil fruit known as the chop chop and is known as the chop chop man.
Captain Buggy loves blowing things up and he is going to blow up the town. There is a dog in this volume who is known as ChouChou and he gives off major Hatchi vibes. His master was the owner of the feed store in town and the owner had to go to the hospital and put ChouChou in charge. The owner never came back and so ChouChou has been guarding the store. The pirates are beating up on this dog because they want to get into the store. The captains first maite Mohji who is a lion tamer and rides in a on a lion and they almost kill ChouChou. The store gets destroyed and ChouChou ends up being given a single crushed box of food that survived. He walks away back to the townspeople.
It gives Hatchi vibes because he was a dog that continued to wait at the train station for his owner to return home from work. Luffy and Nami end up arguing about helping the mayor go up against Captain Buggy. The Mayor calls the town and its people his treasure which is very heartwarming.
The mayor's house gets blown up by a buggy ball and Zolo was in there sleeping off his injury and he called the blast the weirdest alarm clock. Mayor Boodle challenges Buggy and Buggy's second mate Cabaji the Acrobat wants to get in on the action.
Captain Buggy hates being called Big Nose and everytime Luffy calls him that, everyone gasps. Like it's nothing new, he will probably call him that again later. The second mate battles Zolo and kicks his ass. Captain Buggy finds out that Luffy is a rubber man and Luffy does the gum gum balloon.
Volume 2 leaves off on a cliifhanger where Luffy and Buggy are preparing to fight and Bugyy mentions a pirate with red hair.
Volume 3: So what has Captain Shanks done to Buggy? Appearently they are mortal enemies. Luffy and Buggy are going back and forth with their gum gum and chop chop moves. Buggy's crew is watching the fight and pretending to be unconscious. Nami is just watching and being bored. Buggy really pisses Liffy off when he makes a hole in Luffy's straw hat, which is his most prized treasure.
Shanks and Buggy used to be apprentice pirates together and when Buggy gets his hands on the straw hat with his swords, Luffy goes ape shit. Also the pictures for every chapter page don't make a lot of sense. They have the characters with different animals. Chapter 18 has Nami sitting on deck with a lemur wearing a scholar hat and glasses and looking down at a book. The pictures are nonsensical and whimsical.
Buggy found a treasure map and stole the devils fruit when he was a pirate apprentice and Shanks scared him so bad that Buggy accidentally ate the devil fruit and spoiled his own plans of making 100 million berries. Buggy separates his body when he uses his chop chop moves and Luffy grabs hold of his foot and starts tickling it when Buggy is going after Nami when she is running away with his treasure. They then tie up Buggy's body so he can't reform and he gets defeated by Luffy's gum gum bazooka.
The townspeople come to rescue the mayor and they are after pirates and Luffy stupidly blurts out... "we're pirates". The townspeople chase them and they head down an alley where ChouChou blocks the townspeople from getting Luffy, Nami and Zolo. Such a good doggo!
Luffy, Nami and Zolo are sailing and they come across a deserted island. Zolo is of course sleeping again and Luffy and Nami go explore the island where they come across a weird bunch of animals. They then meet the guardian of the forest. His name is Gaimon and he is the keeper of the forest. He has been trapped in a box for 20 years and now his body is in the form of the box. He used to be a pirate and loved it. But he thinks Luffy is crazy for going after the grand line and that he has seen pirates come back looking like zombies trying to find the one piece.
Gaimon then tells Luffy and Nami about how he came to be stuck in the box and that there are 5 treasure chests on the cliff. Luffy climbs up there and realizes they are empty. Luffy then offers Gaimon to be apart of their crew. He declines to protect the animals from visitors to the island who are not seeking treasure.
Luffy, Nami and Zolo are off to a little village to prepare for their journey to the grand line. Luffy is obsessing about meat and zolo wants booze. We meet a new character of the village named Usopp who is similare to the boy who cried wolf. He sees pirates on the horizon and causes a commotion through the town. The funny thing is the villagers pay him no attention and it is routine. He tries to play jokes on the villagers and then his crew of two little boys show up. The his third crew member shows up screaming about pirates and seeing the pirate flag of buggy. Usopp gets scared and has to go get a snack.
Usopp is the comedic relief and I think that I will really like him. He takes Luffy and company into twon to get them meat and booze. He tells them of the poor unfortunate girl that lives in the mansion all by herself and he offers to join their crew and be their captain. HAHAHA, no chance Usopp.
Usopp then lives to go see the mistress of the mansion Kaya and give her one of his stories to cheer her up. Usopps crew take Luffy, Nami and Zolo to the mansion to meet and they get caught by Klahadore the butler who I suspect is the one making Kaya sick and his controlling everything. We meet a new dude called Django the hypnotist. He puts Usopps crew to sleep. Luffy tells Usopp about knowing his dad and how is in Captain Shanks crew.
I knew the butler was a bad dude. He is undercover as a butler and is trying to get Django to kill Kaya. Klahadore is Captain Kuro and he does carefully planned raids. After the bad guys talk, Luffy's dumb ass stands up and shouts don't kill Kaya. Like really???
Volume 3 leaves on a cliffhanger with Klahadore talking to his pirate crew and ordering them to attack the village at dawn and Usopp runing through the village shouting the warning and no one believing him.
