I have heard so much about Elizabeth Wein and her books over the past few years and I have always been intrigued because they are during war time, mainly WW2. Going into this I had simple expectations. I was eager to learn more about Ethiopia and that part of the world during the war. I used to watch a youtuber who took a trip to Ethiopia and went to Addis Ababa and I have been fascinated ever since and have been wanting to learn more about this country.
This story is told in essay and flight log format from two kids, an Ethiopian American boy named Teo and a American girl named Emmy. They have been together since birth because their mothers were the famous Black Dove and White Raven fliers. This is obviously set in the 1930's right at the beginning of the war. Delia and Rhoda are fused at the hip and are basically soulmates. One day, a bird flies into the plane propeller killing Delia. To keep Delia's dream alive and wanting to give her son the freedom of not being judged and hated because of his skin color, Rhoda takes the kids to Ethiopia. The homeland of Teo's father who was a slave. The country is beautiful and that are the only independent country in Africa that has not been colonized. Then the Italians arrive and invade due to Mussolini.
I learned a good bit more about the Italian and Africa side of the war and I have more questions. Reading about the religious objects that are supposedly from or still in Ethiopia reminded me of a show that I watched where the host was on a mission to try to find the Ark of the Covenant.
I will definitely be picking up more books by Elizabeth Wein.
