My Thoughts: I did not get into this story until about halfway through. It is really slow at the beginning and no idea what is happening or why. We eventually find out the characters name and his life and how he is bored by it. He is 28 years old and he is very naive and trusting of other foreigners. He wins some money at a casino and is instantly the talk of the town. He gets robbed by an American who is hooked on heroin and who eventually is murdered. I like how the book surrounds the winning of the money, and the influx of characters and how they are all connected through the money.
About the Author: Lawrence Osborne is the author of one previous novel, Ania Malina, and six books of nonfiction, including the memoir Bangkok Days. His journalism and short stories have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Newsweek, Forbes, Tin House, Harper’s, Conde Nast Traveler, and many other publications. Osborne has led a nomadic life, residing for years in France, Italy, Morocco, the United States, Mexico, and Thailand. He currently lives in Istanbul.
